Please stop including Black couples in the name of 'inclusivity.' We're all set!

As a self-proclaimed reality TV junkie who also detests many societal conventions, I find Married at First Sight to be fascinating. On the one hand, the show claims to use complex scientific algorithms to find contestants their perfect mates, sight unseen. On the other hand, including a legal marriage as a prerequisite for participation is a hellish curveball that I find seriously enticing.

Moreover, although the Western world promotes marrying for love (or finances) above all, given our divorce rates and declining marriage rates in general, I'm not sure we've totally gotten it right either. Therefore, when I learned the full scope of what Married at First Sight is about, I was immediately on board. However, since I had already missed several seasons, I simply jumped in and binge-watched as many episodes as possible.

Nevertheless…

I started to notice a troubling trend regarding some of the Black couples on the show. For instance, in season 7, we met the very colorist Tristan Thompson, who made it abundantly clear that he didn't want to marry a darker woman because he needed someone to 'melt his butter' or whatever the heck his verbiage was. A man who, shocker, turned out to be a jerk and ruined the marriage with his preference, Mia.
